Resources

QueenSpark has a wealth of resource material, gained over thirty years of documenting and publishing the lives of local people. We are currently in the process of reviewing this body of work and rewriting some of the material, where necessary. In the future, we hope to be able to offer resources to meet people’s needs in the following areas:

  • Promotion of workshops, courses and writing groups
  • How to recruit members and attendees
  • Practical advice on conducting workshops, courses and writing groups
  • Process and methods of collecting life stories
  • Monitoring and evaluating life stories
  • Information on copyright and intellectual property
  • Training for workshop, courses and group leaders
  • Guide to selecting books for publication
  • Funding for publishing books
  • New technologies – internet
  • Distribution of books

20th CENTURY SPARKS!
20th Century Sparks! is an education pack based around the QueenSpark archive. It has been created for Primary and Secondary school teachers, as well as parents, as a guide to the rich resources of the archive, and to support the teaching of history from a local perspective at Keystage 1, 2 and 3. It can also be used to support the teaching of Citizenship, English and Drama.

The Education pack is made up of extracts drawn from the archive, which form an engaging history of the first half of twentieth century Brighton and Hove, as told by a generation of mainly working-class people. These extracts have been grouped under themes in a way that maintains their original spirit and that is also relevant to the National Curriculum. The themes include: memories of home, school, work, community, poverty, World War One, World War Two, the seaside and a history of community publishing.
