The First Step

By Janine

The First Step

I stepped off the face of the earth.
Arms and legs outstretched,
I unravelled myself upwards,
Floating far off into space.

The din of screams and cries died away.
Car horns wailed and weakened.
Songs spilled from bird’s beaks,
Tweet twitter.
Fainter, fainter, fainter

Air in my hair,
Past the soundproof sky,
Up into darkness,
Where the stars never hide.

I looked down on the earth,
Like a button on my shirt,
Loosening my clothing,
Among the velvet night
