13: QueenSpark archiveBy Stella Cardus
In 2004 QueenSpark Books won a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to archive its extensive collection of books.
As a result, the QueenSpark online archive was launched on 1 March 2006 at the Brighthelm Centre, when Ursula Howard (above with Stella Cardus and John Riches) spoke movingly about early books and the origins of the organisation. The event was full-to-bursting with volunteers, workers and associates from QueenSpark's history - 34 years and counting! For the first time, the new site allowed visitors to browse through the entire catalogue of published books, buy them, or if they were out of print vote for a re-print. They could also search inside the books and read extracts including the words or phrases they searched for. This functionality is now an integral part of this site.
