Produced in association with the Lewis Cohen Urban Studies Centre, this collection of photographs and reminiscences is based on material gathered by Brighton Borough Council, with the intention of creating a record of houses that were scheduled for demolition during the 1930s. The houses were in a designated ‘slum clearance area’ and were shut down by the council because they were in a state of disrepair. The book records the mostly negative responses of residents to the demolition, describing their feelings about moving and giving their opinions as to the reasons behind Brighton Borough Council’s decision. Many people within the community expressed unhappiness with the council for their heavy-handed attitude and for allowing the properties to become so neglected, as the photographic representations clearly show.
