Tale of a Boy Soldier

Tale of a Boy Soldier

sub titleA Great War Memoir
partners(s)University of Brighton
description

In 1999, QueenSpark Books received a manuscript written by George Parker. Entitled by him "G.K. Parker - History and Memories", it described his boyhood in Brighton in the early 1900s, and his service as a 15 year old volunteer soldier in the First World War. The manuscript, with only very minor editorial amendments, was published in 2001 as The Tale of a Boy Soldier. It became a best seller and now, as part of our drive to make wartime reminisences more widely available, we are working on a re-print.

The book's new cover, shown here, has been designed by a student on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course at the University of Brighton. Look out for it in local bookshops in the run up to Christmas.

sub titleHave you got any old letters or diaries?
partners(s)Heritage Lottery Fund, East Sussex Record Office, University of Sussex and the Mass Observation Archive
description

Through the creation of an archive of personal unpublished papers collected from the residents of Brighton and Hove, this QueenSpark project aims to show the historical value of everyday writings, such as letters and diaries.

At the end of the project in November 2008 we will publish a book and an online exhibition of the documents collected. But it is not too late to have your old letters or diaries included, so please tell us about them! We're looking for love letters, travel journals, war letters, diaries of daily life...written centuries ago or in the last few years.
